The article examines the city of Salerno in the 14th century, especially from an economic and commercial point of view. To this end, it analyses the function exercised by the main structures that expressed its economic profile, first and foremost the annual fair and the port, dating back to the mid-13th century, but also the widespread network of artisan and commercial workshops. Around them were concentrated the interests of all the social components of the city, including ecclesiastical and religious ones, including the newly established or older monasteries.
