The widespread literary, linguistic and artistic interest in the history of the Goths, and more generally in Germanic antiquities, which flourished between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, first in Scandinavia and then across much of Europe, also extended to Italy. This Italian interest is also reflected in Torquato Tasso’s tragedy “King Torrismondo” (1586), set in barbaric Gothia, which will be analysed primarily from the perspective of the Nordic sources used (in particular “Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus” by Olaus Magnus).

Abstract

The widespread literary, linguistic and artistic interest in the history of the Goths, and more generally in Germanic antiquities, which flourished between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, first in Scandinavia and then across much of Europe, also extended to Italy. This Italian interest is also reflected in Torquato Tasso’s tragedy “King Torrismondo” (1586), set in barbaric Gothia, which will be analysed primarily from the perspective of the Nordic sources used (in particular “Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus” by Olaus Magnus).
