Abstract

As the word progresses with high speed towards a new technological tomorrow, the environmental implications and possible utilization of technological advancements come into play. As waste generation continues to increase, currently ranging from 0.11 to 4.54 kg/capita daily on a global scale, the need for holistic approaches towards waste management strategies as well as circular economy practices is vital, in accordance to policies, legislations, action plans and strategies (i.e. European Green Deal, Sustainable Development Goals, Circular Economy Action Plan etc.). In this accord, this paper delves into the convergence of the metaverse and waste management strategies, highlighting the profound impact virtual environments can have on enhancing sustainability practices. Through an examination of practical applications, the authors offer a comprehensive overview of how digital and virtual technologies can effectively tackle real-world environmental challenges. By exploring these intersections, the transformative potential of the metaverse becomes evident, underscoring its pivotal role in fostering a sustainable future. At the same time, recommendations on how to tackle possible shortcomings, ethical and environmental considerations to correctly integrate the metaverse into waste management strategies are recommended. These simulations enable the modeling and prediction of outcomes for different waste management policies, facilitating data-driven decision-making. Furthermore, they enhance monitoring and reporting capabilities by leveraging real-time data from virtual environments. Such contributions are vital in supporting the transition towards sustainable cities and communities.
