The zeolite-rich rock from the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff geological formation, acting as an ion exchanger for NH₄⁺, reduces ammonium concentrations during anaerobic digestion and limits ammonia losses during composting of marine waste. Its moderate affinity for Na⁺ also partially reduces salinity in the marine waste/anaerobic sludge suspension, improving digestion efficiency and compost quality. Ultimately, the incorporation of natural zeolites enhances the ecological performance of the resulting amendments, supporting soil functionality and promoting spontaneous vegetation recovery in poor Mediterranean environments. Their contribution strengthens sustainable restoration strategies, by showing that waste-derived amendants achieve functional efficacy while maintening ecologically safety.
