Frequent questions surrounding memory, particularly in relation to new generations and waves of disinformation, are what is remembered and why it is remembered. The question of how memory is constructed concerns structural and epistemological issues: how we approach memory and how memory, in turn, approaches us. This article examines the problems involved in the discursive construction of memory in post-dictatorship Chile, that is, the period following the return to democracy in 1990. The starting point is a critical engagement with the approaches to memory proposed by Anna Cento Bull and Hans Lauge Hansen in their article “On Agonistic Memory” (2016), applying them, on the one hand, to the discursive formations of memory within the aforementioned context, and on the other, to the feasibility and desirability of valuing the affective dimension of memory within a societal horizon capable of expanding its understanding of the recent past.
