DESENVOLVIMENTO E TRABALHO NA INDÚSTRIA AUTOMOTIVA: percepções acerca da presença da Stellantis em territórios greenfield no Brasil e na Itália

This study investigates the territorial effects of establishing automotive plants in greenfield contexts, based on a comparative analysis of Melfi (Italy), Porto Real (Brazil), and Goiana (Brazil). Based on the interplay between Global Value Chains (GVCs) and Global Production Networks (GPNs), the study explores the extent to which the relationships between economic and social upgrading translate into local development. Methodologically, it adopts a qualitative approach, incorporating document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and fieldwork. The results show that, despite advances in process and product dimensions, the territorial effects are uneven. In Melfi, the prevailing perception is of retrenchment and distancing, associated with recent dynamics of downgrading. In Porto Real, the gains are territorially fragmented, with low involvement of the local population. Goiana, on the other hand, exhibits high productive dynamism but faces challenges regarding the distribution of gains and institutional entrenchment.
