Light field images record not only the intensity of light emanating from a scene but also its direction at every spatial position, effectively capturing the full geometry of visual information. This rich representation enables groundbreaking applications across diverse domains: from medicine and virtual reality, where it enhances immersion and realism, to industrial design and manufacturing, where it facilitates detailed inspection of models and prototypes from multiple perspectives. However, the inherently large size and multidimensional nature of light field datasets make data compression an essential step prior to storage or transmission. In this study, we conduct an extensive experimental evaluation of lossless compression efficiency on light field images, comparing both conventional and emerging video compression techniques.

Abstract
Light field images record not only the intensity of light emanating from a scene but also its direction at every spatial position, effectively capturing the full geometry of visual information. This rich representation enables groundbreaking applications across diverse domains: from medicine and virtual reality, where it enhances immersion and realism, to industrial design and manufacturing, where it facilitates detailed inspection of models and prototypes from multiple perspectives. However, the inherently large size and multidimensional nature of light field datasets make data compression an essential step prior to storage or transmission. In this study, we conduct an extensive experimental evaluation of lossless compression efficiency on light field images, comparing both conventional and emerging video compression techniques.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
