Abstract

Salvatore de Renzi (1799-1872) is remembered above all, besides his activity of physician and epidemiologist, as historian of the medicine and the Medical School of Salerno. He was a tireless collector and publisher of medical salernitan scriptures and its works are considered today essential for medicine history, even if some of his interpretations are old from a more modern hermeneutics. Purpose of this work is to return Renzi’s image to a complexity that nevertheless doesn’t exhaust just being a medicine historical, and that has remained in shade till now, despite recent and meritorious contributions. Child of his time, he shared the more innovative ideal and political values of it, committing at the same time to a constant cultural activity that put him in contact with the greatest contemporary intellectuals, inside and out the Kingdom of Naples. His large scientific production, also shows his different intellectual curiousness’s, debtors for a good part of the “vichian” lesson, from which his constant interest for the history tout court (and of the medieval one particularly) depends, in which he often projected the contemporaneousness, convinced as ha was of the “militant” value of making history.
