Already attested in eleventh-century documents in Calabria, the Campanian toponym Oscato/a occurs as Usclatum in a parchment of the convent of Montevergine (near Avellino) dated 1135. In all likelihood, the form Usclatum is to be traced back to ustulatum and can arguably be included in the group of fairly common toponyms which revolve around the notion of deforesting an area by means of controlled fire in order to make it more fertile and suitable for agricultural use or grazing – a notion usually conveyed by such technical verb as ustulo(which is a diminutive of uro).

Abstract

Already attested in eleventh-century documents in Calabria, the Campanian toponym Oscato/a occurs as Usclatum in a parchment of the convent of Montevergine (near Avellino) dated 1135. In all likelihood, the form Usclatum is to be traced back to ustulatum and can arguably be included in the group of fairly common toponyms which revolve around the notion of deforesting an area by means of controlled fire in order to make it more fertile and suitable for agricultural use or grazing – a notion usually conveyed by such technical verb as ustulo(which is a diminutive of uro).
