The thyroid nodule is a problem that affects about 10% of the adult population but approximately 95% of the nodules is clinically non-neoplastic and does not require surgical treatment of principle. The aim of the presurgical diagnosis of the thyroid nodules is to discriminate, nodules with medical or surgical indication. Fine needle aspiration cytology is a fundamental diagnostic technique in diagnosing thyroid nodules. This review summarizes the diagnostic issues related to the cytological diagnosis of the main thyroidal pathological entities and the contribution that new technologies may offer to the diagnostic cytology.
