Politian’s Letters at the State Archive in Florence – This essay focuses on letters not included in Politian’s collection and mostly held in the Medicean fund at the State Archive in Florence, from which they were taken and published by Isidoro Del Lungo in 1867. Part of a broader collection of letters which Politian wrote in vernacular so as to make their content understandable and accessible even to those who did not have a classical instruction, the letters are mostly on practical issues pertaining to the activities of Lorenzo de Medici’s sons and other specific matters which would not have been understood as clearly if they had been written in Latin. The fact that the letters were dispersed in the past indicates that there were no objective reasons, but merely economic ones, to collect them.
