The suburbs of contemporary cities are complex and conflicting territories, always changing, frontier places to be known from the inside, as they cannot be represented by a single model. Starting from this perspective, the present work investigates the multiple forms that the periphery can assume in different contexts, with reference to a specific area of investigation, the city of Naples. This is a case study particularly relevant on both the national and the European scale, for the coexistence of neighborhoods and peripheral enclaves extremely diverse by geomorphological conformation, urban history, social composition, settlement and functional structure. The aim is to propose a dense description of this urban patchwork, i.e. a description capable of providing an image sufficiently representative of the variety, complexity and richness of characters, problems and resources present in these border areas.

Abstract
The suburbs of contemporary cities are complex and conflicting territories, always changing, frontier places to be known from the inside, as they cannot be represented by a single model. Starting from this perspective, the present work investigates the multiple forms that the periphery can assume in different contexts, with reference to a specific area of investigation, the city of Naples. This is a case study particularly relevant on both the national and the European scale, for the coexistence of neighborhoods and peripheral enclaves extremely diverse by geomorphological conformation, urban history, social composition, settlement and functional structure. The aim is to propose a dense description of this urban patchwork, i.e. a description capable of providing an image sufficiently representative of the variety, complexity and richness of characters, problems and resources present in these border areas.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
