This paper proposes a new approach to the issue of the Lucanian praefecturae in the liber coloniarum I, and attempts to solve the criticalities in the generally accepted interpretation of the text. Praefectura is here understood as a terminus technicus to indicate all territorial ablation aimed at constitute a new agrarian settlement, both as appendice of a colonial foundation, and as restricted and autonomous territorial entity with the dignity of civitas, and with their own land division coinciding only in one case with the Gracchan limitatio.
