Bernard of Clairvaux has left a legacy that affects the theological and philosophical debate about the relationship between spiritual and temporal powers. At the beginning of the fourteenth century theological and philosophical issues and arguments were regularly rehearsed at medieval universities such as the University of Paris. This paper aims to examine Bernard of Clairvaux’s legacy and its impact taking into account John of Paris’s De regia potestate et papali. The article examines Bernard’s portray outlined in John’s tract. De regia potestate et papali was a scholastic work meant to examine the generic or philosophical relationship between the regnum and the sacerdotium and to expound research of the via media. However, John of Paris’s vision of Bernard’s thought is opposed to the one delineated by the pro-papal tracts. Thus, while claiming to treat Bernard’s thought with impartiality, John provides his interpretation of Bernard’s work. Therefore John of Paris’ De regia potestate et papali shows how Bernard’s legacy depends on the vision of his interpreter. This is one of the best examples of the effects of politics on hermeneutics.
