L'Atlantiade, ou la Théogonie newtonienne est le résultat d'une longue gestation qui commence bien avant la date de sa parution en 1812. D’après ce qu’affirme Lemercier, l'idée lui serait venue en 1783, en assistant à l'ascension de l'aérostat de Charles que l'auteur perçut comme un véritable spectacle dramatique. Dans cette « épopée », qui mêle poésie scientifique et pensée utopique) Atlantide devient le « théâtre » d’une guerre entre les vertueux Symphytes et les Atlantes, un peuple corrompu par la religion. En dépit de son genre littéraire) qui inscrit le poème dans la tradition de la poésie vulgarisatrice, Lemercier se sert de l'utopie d’Atlantide dans une réflexion critique sur les mutations politiques de son époque.
