The role of Russian in the former Soviet States, and Ukraine, in particular, has recently re-attracted scholars’ attention. Here, besides the national language(s), Russian still covers many of its former social and linguistic domains. Nonetheless, the mutated geopolitical and cultural circumstances are increasing the divergence process between the Russian language of Russia, or Standard Russian, and the Russian spoken in Ukraine. The article aims at evaluating some significant socio-cultural aspects that have contributed to the shaping of the contemporary Ukraine’s language situation and analyzing specific and recurrent language features typical of the Russian spoken in Ukraine.
