This paper continues a series of interrelated articles on the influence Latin exerted on Old Church Slavonic. The Latin lexical heritage is not only the result of translation as it has been often implied in the literature on this topic. Nevertheless the study of the first attested Latin lexemes in the Slavic language is a fundamental “starting point” to understand the extent of Latin influence on proto Slavonic and the early developmental stages of Slavonic languages. Both extra-linguistic (historical, geographical, and archaeological) and linguistic (etymological) data are examined to provide a more reliable interpretation of the ways the Latinisms penetrated into the Proto Slavonic dialects and consequently into Old Church Slavonic.
