The affirmation English as a global language has led to a (re)consideration of its role as a lingua franca in cross-cultural exchanges and multilingual contexts through a scenario in which the English languages are compared to members of a traditional family as a social institution and in which communication needs to be warranted, overcoming the still existing barriers across more and more permeable boundaries.
