Over its 33-year history, the prize aimed to recognize literary achievements in German by individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The article traces the prize's development from its inception in the mid-1980s to its discontinuation in 2017, highlighting shifts in its conceptual framework and the broader societal debates surrounding cultural identity, inclusion, and language politics in Germany.
