In this paper we present a parser for symbolic two-dimensional languages. To do this we characterize the class of linear pictorial languages as a generalization of the context-free string languages and introduce a syntax-directed technique to scan a two-dimensional picture. The main idea behind this is to allow a traditional LR parser to choose the next symbol to parse from a two-dimensional space. Cases of ambiguity are analyzed and some ways to avoid them are presented. As a final result, we show how to build a parser for a subset of the two-dimensional arithmetical expression language. © 1994.

Abstract
In this paper we present a parser for symbolic two-dimensional languages. To do this we characterize the class of linear pictorial languages as a generalization of the context-free string languages and introduce a syntax-directed technique to scan a two-dimensional picture. The main idea behind this is to allow a traditional LR parser to choose the next symbol to parse from a two-dimensional space. Cases of ambiguity are analyzed and some ways to avoid them are presented. As a final result, we show how to build a parser for a subset of the two-dimensional arithmetical expression language. © 1994.File in questo prodotto:
