At the end of the 19th century, the Vatican had to fulfil its historical duty of monitoring and defense of its own believers from the multitude of threats occurring in North America. In this perspective, the relational dynamics with Protestantism was of importance for both the Church in the United States and for the Roman ‘center’. By drawing upon Vatican archival documents, the present essay aims to highlight how the American case had represented some sort of exception, both chronologically and substantially, as per the transnational approach that the Vatican pursued with respect to the Protestant matter between the end of 19th century and the outbreak of World War I.

Abstract
At the end of the 19th century, the Vatican had to fulfil its historical duty of monitoring and defense of its own believers from the multitude of threats occurring in North America. In this perspective, the relational dynamics with Protestantism was of importance for both the Church in the United States and for the Roman ‘center’. By drawing upon Vatican archival documents, the present essay aims to highlight how the American case had represented some sort of exception, both chronologically and substantially, as per the transnational approach that the Vatican pursued with respect to the Protestant matter between the end of 19th century and the outbreak of World War I.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
