The essay aims at analyzing the conception of philosophical hermeneutics as the ontology of actuality developed by Gianni Vattimo. As the philosopher himself has stated, the expression provides a retrospective view of his philosophical journey. Indeed, on the one hand, by using the term ontology, Vattimo emphasizes the indispensability for philosophy and hermeneutics to continue addressing being, not in a metaphysical sense but in a Heideggerian sense, which represents one of the specific characteristics of his theoretical position. On the other hand, with reference to actuality, it points to a critical reflection on modernity and technology, constituting one of the Leitmotifs of his entire intellectual itinerary.
