Global history has greatly influenced the way all traditional themes of European history and the question of mobility are considered. However, as the macro-scale increasingly seems to become a scientific obligation in historical research, a role for micro-history is again on the horizon. Letters and egodocuments when studied through a micro-historical approach allow us to capture the subjective experiences of people who lived in the past as well as to highlight their desire to be active protagonists of their own existence. In the exploration of the mechanisms of memory and identity construction through the experience of mobility, moreover, the micro-historical approach can play its specific role both in questioning established views of global and mobility history and in rediscovering history as a science of life.
