Abstract: The essay examines the duel between Achilles and Hector in the Iliad, highlighting its structural centrality and multiple foreshadowings throughout the poem. The episode is not only the climax of Achilles’ wrath but a symbolic junction involving identity, heroism, and the treatment of bodies. The analysis then turns to Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles, where the duel is dramatically shortened, stripped of epic context, and narrated by the dead Patroclus. The scene shifts from ritual combat to a private act of grief and revenge. Despite the reduction, Miller retains key mythic elements—Achilles’ spear, Hector’s exposed throat—preserving the tragic and symbolic core of the conflict.
