The Migrant Reception Model in Southern Europe: Some Findings from a Comparative Survey · This article aims to discuss some results of the qualitative research conducted in two southern European provinces: the province of Salerno and the province of Cadiz, in the second half of 2023. After a brief description of the social, political and institutional context in which the problem of welcoming migrants in Italy and Spain is placed today , it moves on to an analysis of the connotations of the foreign collective present in the two previously mentioned areas. The survey is mainly based on interviews with a selected group of key informants, i.e. activists, civil servants and operators of civil society organizations active in reception services for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The comparative analysis of the information and opinions obtained from the respondents in each set of interviews focuses in particular on a number of issues: (1) the attitudes of the host society towards migrants, (2) the orientation of public policies in relation to the migration issue, (3) migrant reception and management practices. The study concludes that the current migratory model of reception in Italy and Spain is oriented towards the control and management of migrants. Public opinion, concerned for its own safety , increasingly supports these control practices.
