This article analyses the intersection of history and ignorance, tracing the rise of agnotology in the social sciences. Through a comparative reading of recent books by leading historians Peter Burke and Alain Corbin, it reflects on a crucial shift in scholarship that has redefined ignorance. Specifically, it highlights the paradoxical nature of ignorance as an absent object that is still capable of producing concrete effects and assuming a performative value in political and cultural spheres.
